Tizanidine is a centrally acting muscle relaxant used to relieve muscle spasms and increased muscle tone (spasticity). It works primarily through alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in the central nervous system, reducing signals that contribute to muscle tightness.
Benefits:
- Helps relieve painful muscle spasms
- Reduces muscle stiffness and tightness
- May improve mobility in people with muscle spasticity
- Can support rehabilitation when muscle spasms limit movement
- Certain chronic pain conditions involving muscle spasms
- Occasionally used for tension-related headaches under medical supervision
Potential Side Effects:
- Drowsiness and fatigue
- Dizziness and low blood pressure
- Dry mouth
Common Use: Usually started at a low dose and adjusted according to response and tolerability. The dose and frequency depend on the condition being treated.
Note: Tizanidine can cause significant sedation and hypotension. Avoid alcohol and use caution when combining it with opioids, benzodiazepines or other sedating medicines. Do not stop prolonged, high-dose treatment abruptly without medical advice, as rebound hypertension and rapid heart rate may occur.
