Sevelamer carbonate is a non-calcium phosphate binder used primarily to control elevated phosphate levels (hyperphosphataemia) in people with chronic kidney disease, particularly those receiving dialysis. It binds dietary phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, reducing its absorption.
Benefits:
- Lowers blood phosphate levels
- Helps manage CKD-related mineral and bone disorders
- Avoids additional calcium loading compared with calcium-based phosphate binders
- May help reduce complications associated with prolonged hyperphosphataemia
Off-Label Uses:
- Management of hyperphosphataemia in selected patients with advanced CKD outside dialysis settings
- Occasionally investigated for additional phosphate-binding applications
Potential Side Effects:
- Constipation
- Nausea or vomiting
- Abdominal pain and bloating
- Diarrhoea
Common Use: Taken with meals or snacks so that it can bind phosphate from food. The dose is individualized according to serum phosphate levels and response to treatment.
