Febuxostat 40mg is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor used to lower uric acid levels in people with gout and chronic hyperuricaemia. It reduces the body’s production of uric acid and helps prevent the formation of urate crystals.
Benefits:
- Lowers blood uric acid levels
- Helps prevent recurrent gout attacks
- Reduces urate crystal formation over time
- Can be used when allopurinol is unsuitable or not tolerated
Off-Label Uses:
- Prevention of uric-acid kidney stones in selected patients
- Hyperuricaemia associated with certain medical conditions, under specialist supervision
Potential Side Effects:
- Nausea or diarrhoea
- Headache
- Skin rash
- Abnormal liver function tests
- Gout flares can temporarily increase when treatment is started
Common Use: Usually taken once daily, with the dose adjusted according to serum uric acid levels and the patient’s clinical circumstances.
Note: Febuxostat is not a painkiller and does not provide immediate relief during an acute gout attack. Cardiovascular history and liver function may need consideration before and during treatment.
