Aldactone (Spironolactone)
Aldactone contains spironolactone, a potassium-sparing diuretic and aldosterone antagonist. It is primarily prescribed for fluid retention, hypertension, heart failure and certain hormone-related conditions. In bodybuilding circles, it is sometimes discussed for its anti-androgenic and diuretic effects.
Benefits:
- Helps reduce excess fluid retention
- Promotes increased urinary water excretion
- Blocks aldosterone activity
- Has anti-androgenic effects
Bodybuilding Use:
- Sometimes used by physique athletes for short-term reduction of water retention
- Its anti-androgenic properties may counter androgen effects, but this can also negatively affect muscle-building and sexual function
- Not recommended as a routine bodybuilding or contest-preparation drug because electrolyte disturbances and dehydration can be dangerous
Off-Label Uses:
- Acne and hirsutism
- Female pattern hair loss
- Hyperaldosteronism
Potential Side Effects:
- High potassium levels
- Dehydration and low blood pressure
- Muscle weakness or cramps
Note: Spironolactone can cause potentially serious hyperkalaemia and dehydration, particularly when combined with other potassium-raising medicines or diuretics. It should not be used simply as a physique-enhancement diuretic without medical supervision.
