Bacteriostatic Water for Injection is sterile water containing a small amount of benzyl alcohol, usually 0.9%, which helps inhibit bacterial growth. It is used as a diluent for preparing certain injectable medicines when the product’s instructions specifically permit it.
Uses:
- Reconstituting medications: Used to dissolve certain powdered medicines for injection, according to their manufacturer’s instructions.
- Pharmaceutical preparation: Used as a diluent for compatible injectable medications.
- Multi-dose applications: The bacteriostatic preservative allows repeated withdrawals from a vial within the specified period, provided sterile technique is maintained.
- Laboratory applications: May be used for certain compatible procedures, subject to the product’s intended use.
Important Considerations:
- BAC water is not interchangeable with sterile water for injection or bacteriostatic saline.
- It is not suitable for every injectable medicine; some products require a different diluent.
- Benzyl alcohol can be harmful to newborns and should not be used for neonatal injections.
- It should not be used for intravenous administration in situations where the product’s labelling does not permit it.
- The preservative does not prevent contamination caused by poor handling.
Note: Use only a pharmaceutical-grade product labelled for the intended purpose. Follow the medication manufacturer’s instructions for compatibility, preparation, storage and disposal.
